featuring parts of a book, story elements and number sense
Set the stage to engage:
Students were asked to wear aprons to school, I provided the hat, tables were covered with checkered table clothes, a scentsy sugar cookie aroma and some Happy Music.......
First things First...
We talked about recipes and made Apple Pie Playdough (that we used later on for our Story Pies)
Parts of a Book
Students were introduced to parts of a book by using an interactive white board. Each student was placed in a baking group and I would appoint a head Baker. The head Baker was responsible to appropriate group work and trouble shooting. Each table was served a front cover, spine and back cover puzzle. They had to put this together and identify the parts.
Characters and Setting
We discussed the importance of the characters and setting in a story and students had to go back to their seat and sort pictures. (again I assigned a Head Baker)
Problem and Solution
We then discussed problems and solutions and worked on the interactive board. Students then went back to their seats to press their dough in the bottom of their pie pans and create their own Story Pie using pictures that I had sorted in 4 different bowls.
They had to have a character, setting, problem and solution. Once they completed their pie they could add some pretend cherries or apples to their pie. Then it was time to share their story with a partner.

Number Sense
We have been studying numbers. This week we focused on numbers 6 and 7. Students were given a piece of foil that had a template and they had to show different makes to represent the number using play dough.
Last But Not Least...
While they played with their cookie cutters and play dough, I baked them sugar cookies to enjoy!!!!
