Gingerbread Man

Every year we kick off the holiday season by reading different versions of the Gingerbread Man.  We have a class Gingerbread Man that seems to move around the classroom when we aren't looking.
Well, today was the day that he escaped.  He left behind a few clues such as cookie crumbs and our principal sent in video footage of his exit....... Stay tuned for sightings of our Gingerbread Man!!!!

Introducing Addition with large T-Shirt and balloons

Today we introduced addition with the PLUS sign (thanks for the suggestion Tracie).  We had a great visual using a large T-Shirt with a plus sign.  We added 1 balloon at a time to show how "it grows" or "gets larger" when we add.
Once we completed the activity I hung the shirt up so the class will remember what it look like. Tomorrow we will label the shirt with key words such as joining, combining, all together.
When we introduce subtraction, I plan on having the minus sign on the back and we will pop the balloons to show how the amount gets smaller!  I will post pictures soon!

Please comment on other ways that you introduce addition.  Thanks in advance!

Head Band Game 1 More 1 Less

We played the Head Band Game 1 More 1 Less for numbers 11-20.

Materials Needed: number cards 11-20, cards that read 1 More1 Less, head bands, recording sheet (I copied each students picture and drew a line beside it- if your students can read names easily, pictures aren't necessary)

Objective: Each student was given a head band, a number card and a 1 More or 1 Less Card.  Each student was responsible for recording their peers answer.
I gave them an extra challenge:  Who can fill in all the blanks before the music stops?

They could look in the mirror to try and figure out their correct answer.

Bean Boozled

BEAN BOOZLED        BEAN BOOZLED      BEAN BOOZLED

Objective: Students will read high frequency words with a bonus game!  Students will count to 10.

Each group will need: 1 Bean Boozled candy set (I used 4th edition-found on Amazon), jelly beans for counters, 10 frames, sight words and cards for drawing.

1 student will turn over a sight word, if they can read the word, they get to place a jelly bean on their 10 frame.  Once the student gets to 10 they can draw a card from the card pile.  It will either read:
SKIP - they don't have to spin
SPIN - spin for bean boozled
GIVE TO A FRIEND -  choose a friend at the table that has to spin
They can do ask the card says or they can spin.... All my class chose to SPIN!
Each table needs a Bean Boozled set (I asked my class parents for donations)

After explaining the rules, I appointed team captains to help with following directions and raising their hand if they had a question.

Have trash cans sitting near by just in case someone gets an awful flavor!!!!!

Once a student reached 10, the class stopped and we all sang....
Bean Boozled Bean Boozled (name ) has been Bean Boozled.

NUMBER SURGERY

NUMBER SURGERY in Kindergarten
Objective: Students will compose and decompose numbers 6-10.  Students will read, write and represent numbers 6-10.  Students will formulate different ways to create numbers 6-10.

Prior to this lesson.. I told my students that they would be "On Call" to perform a surgery in the classroom.  We had been talking about community helpers and how doctors help us.  They all decided that they wanted to be a doctor/surgeon so this is were the idea "on call" came from.  The day of the surgery, the students walked into the classroom to see this........

My Wonderful Homeroom Mom create my Ambulance.

MY WONDERFUL HUSBAND CREATED
THE IV STANDS OUT OF PVC PIPE.  THE
BAGS ARE PIPING BAGS FOR ICINGS
AND THE RED BLOOD LIKE MIXTURE IS
LIQUID HAND SOAP WITH RED FOOD
COLORING.  I BOUGHT THE CLEAR TUBING
FROM HOME-DEPOT.

THE HEART BEAT MONITOR WAS PLAYING IN THE
BACKGROUND AS THE STUDENTS WERE PERFORMING
THE SURGERY.
LARGE LIGHTS WERE ATTACHED
TO LOOK LIKE SURGERY LIGHTS.

CHAIRS SET UP TO LOOK LIKE A MEDICAL CLASS.

IN THE PATIENT FILE: A NUMBER THAT HAD BEEN IN A
"WRECK" AND NEEDED HELP BEING PUT BACK TOGETHER.
AN OBSERVATION SHEET TO COMPLETE AT THE END OF THE
SURGERY.
EACH TABLE WAS ASSIGNED A PATIENT FILE.

EACH TABLE HAD A BIN WITH TOOLS: GLUE, 10 FRAMES, NUMBER LINE, NUMBER BONDS, BAND AIDS,
COTTON BALLS, Q-TIPS, SEQUENCE, MARKERS

I PERFORMED SURGERY ON MY NUMBER 1ST SO THE
CLASS WOULD HAVE AN IDEA OF THE CORRECT STEPS TO TAKE.

Parents volunteered to "scrub" the kids in.

1st they had to identify their "patient" (number)- cut up number

Next step was to create the number:

After checking multiple times to see if there was a "heartbeat", then their patient was admitted for home.
